Southside theatre group will be scrummaging with odd-shaped balls in June as they perform Up ‘n’ Under (parts 1 & 2), John Godber’s comedy set in a northern amateur rugby league team.

“This is an attempt to stage Rocky….and where else? In Yorkshire, of course.” John Godber, 1984

Arthur Hoyle places a bet that he can coach any Amateur Rugby League team to take on the legendary and brutal Cobblers Arms - the team he gets... the Wheatsheaf Arms. A few problems entail for Arthur; the fact that they do not ever field a full team and training is a little slack, which mainly involves drinking pints down the pub while lamenting over their unbroken record of a 54-0 defeat. With the help of Hazel, a local athlete and gym owner, he attempts to whip the team into shape.

Up 'n' Under will be full of action, laughter and maybe the odd tear - like any good Rocky film.

What others have said about Southside:

“Here is a company that clearly puts the audience at the centre of the experience and this gives them real artistic credibility.” (National Operatic and Drama Association).

“Southside have great talent both on and off the stage.” (Sardines magazine.)
