Join our wildlife experts for a guided stroll through the reserve looking out for Dragonflies and damselflies. This is a great opportunity to draw on the knowledge of our Chief Ecologist Richard Bullock, and local naturalist and newspaper columnist Tony Drakeford. They’ll tell you all about these animals and their habitats and provide plenty of tips on identification.

At this time of year, dragonflies should be out in reasonable numbers: Emperor Dragonfly and Black-tailed Skimmer are the ones to look out for. There’s always a chance of Broad-bodied Chaser too. We would expect to see good numbers of Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly and Blue-tailed Damselfly; with the odd Large Red Damselfly and Red-eyed Damselfly always a possibility too. It’s also possible the first of the Small Red-eyed Damselflies might be on the wing.

We’ll also be looking out for butterflies. Large Skipper, Small Skipper, Small White and the odd Green-veined or Large White are likely to be seen. Then there’s always the chance of Holly Blue, Common Blue, Comma or the occasional Red Admiral. The first of the Meadow Browns could be on the wing, along with the odd Speckled Wood in more shaded sun-dappled areas.

As well as looking, we’ll be listening: Common Green Grasshopper is often the first to be heard in June; Field Grasshopper could be worth looking out for too. Roesel’s Bush-cricket was first heard last year on 19 June – so there’s every chance of this being recorded.

We’ll also be talking about the UK’s biggest beetle. Tony is a stag beetle expert and has been breeding these amazing insects at home, so we hope you will also be able to see some up clos
