2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, arguably one of Britain's greatest storytellers. Dickens himself used to give dramatic readings of his work and the diversity of the characters and wide-ranging plots make the novels ideal for stage adaptation.

David Copperfield is rich in characters and incidents. The eternal optimist Mr. Micawber, always one step away from the debtor's prison but convinced that "something will turn up", and Mrs. Gummidge, who enjoys nothing more than being thoroughly miserable, are among Dickens's funniest creations. They are joined by the likes of Betsey Trotwood who takes years to forgive David for not being a girl and the scheming Uriah Heep whose protestations of his "'umble" nature hide terrifying ambitions.

The story follows David from birth to manhood, interweaving the tales of the people he encounters along the way. In typically Dickensian fashion the plot encompasses the highs and lows of Victorian society, from a factory employing child labour (a scene drawn from the author's own experience) to idyllic seaside holidays in Yarmouth.

The sheer scale of the work makes it impossible to include every twist and turn of the book, but this is not a minimalist production. We aim to do full justice to the richness of the original and fill the stage with a colourful panorama of Dickens's imaginative world.
