Latinos from conquered to conquerors, Lecture & Debate with Izzy 'Mr Salsa' Sanabria

global phenomenon throughout the world seducing and captivating many avid followers; today millions are dancing to these rhythms, most with little knowledge about the origins of the music or the rich cultural Afro-Latin history. Clave Latina Festival aims to bring people closer to the roots to improve their knowledge and understanding of these artistic traditions.

On Wednesday, 27th June, Izzy ‘Mr Salsa’ Sanabria will be hosting a lecture and debate at SOAS University entitled Latinos from conquered to conquerors: The emergence of Salsa and the creation of a pan Latin identity in New York. This will be a first hand account and discussion of the emergence of the Salsa movement in New York in the 1970’s, how this musical cultural phenomenon galvanized and united Latinos from different nationalities, in New York, in the whole US and beyond, with the music eventually breaking geographical barriers and reaching the whole world.

A New York legend and historical salsa figure head from Fania Records (the Motown of Latin Music), Izzy Sanabria was responsible for many of the most famous Fania Record covers and posters from that Golden era. He was creator of the ‘Salsa’ tag applied to Latin music, which was more than a musical genre but a musical and cultural movement that eventually conquered the world, he was also founder/editor of ‘Latin New York’, a ground breaking Latin music magazine in the 1970’s and 80’s.
