Patriotic Picnics At Butler’s Wharf Chop House

Nothing brings out one’s patriotic pride quite like an old-fashioned English picnic complete with sandwiches, strawberries, scones and clotted cream. Ah, the simple pleasures in life – a wicker basket, an expanse of green lawn and a slice of pork pie. Butler’s Wharf Chop House, the contemporary yet nostalgic restaurant, bar and grill on the River Thames in London will be reviving the great British picnic tradition every weekend this summer as it throws open its bar and terrace for lazy Saturdays and Sundays with a patriotic flavour.

The Chop House’s bar has been transformed into an evocatively English country garden with pristine green lawns and pretty summer flowers. There’s one not-so-traditional touch that diners will be glad of this summer – a large screen TV showing all the sport, so guests can enjoy a lovely summer lunch with friends and family without missing a moment of the action from Euro 2012, Wimbledon or – of course- the Olympic Games.

Also available every weekend is a fantastic ‘weekend afternoon menu’ offering a main course and a drink for just £9.50 per person – little more than a return fare to the All England Club or the Olympic Stadium. The menu offers good honest food, perfect with a cold point of beer on a summer’s day. Dishes include fish and chips with tartare sauce, a roast pork sandwich with crisps, a Chop House burger with tomato chutney and chips, Aberdeen Angus cottage pie, Cumberland sausages and mash, and grilled goats’ cheese and beetroot salad. Diners can enjoy their choice of dish with a pint of beer, a 125ml glass of house wine or a soft drink of their choice. The picnic at £15 is just as British in inspiration – each one includes a choice of sandwiches (roast beef, watercress and red onion jam or poached salmon, cucumber and cress), accompanied by Montgomery’s cheddar and onion tarts, hot water crust pork pie and piccalilli, vegetable sticks and chickpea purée, English strawberries, scones, clotted cream, raspberry jam and a choice of tea or coffee.

Butler’s Wharf Chop House with its unbeatable location right by Tower Bridge on the banks of the Thames is a superb meeting point for groups of friends, family and colleagues who wish to get together to watch the big events such as the Wimbledon finals on Saturday July 7th and 8th and the Olympic men’s 100m final on Sunday August 5th. Here they can soak up the unique ‘London 2012’ atmosphere in an iconic setting without missing a single moment of sporting history.
