David Barker is a man of many talents. When we saw the way that he expresses his skill using a combination of hand worked ‘Green’ wood and well seasoned timber from a saw mill, we knew that this was a project that many people would like to make and take home.
This course is split into 2 days, about a month apart, to allow the fresh wood to settle into its new form before joining with the stool seat.

Part 1. Sunday 15th July. 10am – 5pm.
Students will select lengths of freshly cut Hornbeam, Chestnut, and Ash sticks brought to the centre by David. Using traditional tools, the bark can be peeled from the branch and shaped using a spokeshave into unique legs for your stool.

The seat is fashioned from well-seasoned hardwood – reclaimed from a boat yard long ago by David. The top can be sanded or planed by hand. Even if you have never used a chisel or plane before, you will learn how to sharpen and care for hand tools.

Part 2. Saturday 18th August. 10am – 5pm.
The holes for the legs will be cut into the seat and the legs adjusted to make sure they fit tightly Finally the stool can be lovingly completed by feeding it with an organic hard wax oil to give a high sheen finish. You will take home a beautiful stool to use for meditation, a gift for a child or just sitting.

We have plenty of traditional hand tools for you to try and learn about.

All tools and materials included. Beginners welcome.
