English Heritage will be taking visitors back to the glamorous 1930s this July (8th) at its magnificent Art Deco inspired Eltham Palace and Gardens in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Visitors will learn all about this decadent period and discover what it took to throw the perfect 1930s society party.
At the ‘Preparation for a Party’ event the Palace will be brought to life by a range of 1930s costumed characters, as they prepare for one of Stephen and Virginia Courtauld’s legendary society parties. Visitors will be invited to interact with colourful characters, both of low and high standing, to gain a real insight into life in the 1930s. What’s more, they will learn about some of the famous guests that were entertained by the Courtaulds, including Queen Mary and the late Queen Mother.
Guests will also be able to get into the ‘swing’ of it with period music throughout the day, as well as finding out why the Palace was the ideal party pad of its time – not surprisingly, as it has a concealed dance floor and rooms specifically designed for entertaining!
In the screening room, home movies from Stephen and Virginia’s private collection will be on display, offering visitors a glimpse at their high society living.
Outside the Palace, the fun continues with traditional games available on the South lawn. The Palace’s beautiful gardens also offer the perfect setting for a summer picnic, or you can treat yourself to a range of scrumptious food and drink at the tearoom or Orangery throughout the day.
Lucy Hutchings, Events Manager for English Heritage, said: “Eltham Palace was one of the most fashionable addresses in the 1930s, a time when Art Deco glamour was at its peak – making it the perfect venue for a party. This event offers a touch of glamour and a brilliant insight into how the 1930s high society lived and partied. Those inspired by the event have the chance to host their own exclusive party as the Palace can now be hired out for hospitality bookings, giving people in the 21st century the chance to party in style!”
Created by society millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld to lavishly entertain their friends and family, this stylish Art Deco mansion offers the perfect setting for a ‘party pad’. The stunning interior features an iconic Art Deco entrance hall, dining room with an aluminium coffered ceiling, indulgent onyx and gold mosaic bathroom and a magnificent medieval great hall.
The 19 acres of gardens at Eltham Palace offer an ideal sport for a summer picnic or leisurely wander.
