Rites & Regulations is a multimedia theatrical mash-up featuring two interwoven Singaporean stories, each dealing with different aspects of death, life, and the funerary experience in a city with no room for exceptions, where the living live in standard-sized homes, and the dead rest in standard-sized graves.

A theatrical experience where narrative, lighting, sound, smells, movement, and projections interact to recreate a sense of quotidian banalities of life, as well as the jarring, almost other-worldly sensorial experience of Taoist-Chinese funerals in Singapore.

The audience is first brought into the Void Deck -- a designated "empty space" in Singapore's government housing estates -- in Mingyu Lin's semi-autobiographical aWake, where a young Singaporean-Chinese girl tries to make sense of the strange Taoist rituals at her late great-grandmother's funeral wake.

As life slowly returns to normal after the funeral, we are then brought into Cui Yin Mok's adaptation of Kuo Pao Kun's The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole, as we follow one of the mourners home. As he goes about his mundane urban routine between work and home, he recounts how his grandfather's coffin had been too big for the hole and the absurd hilarity that ensued when he stood his ground with a bureaucracy that just wanted to get things done.

Showing at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012 in August at ZOO Venues before returning to Singapore for a series of pop-up, site-specific stagings!
