On Thursday 19th July, Wellington Arch on Hyde Park Corner is inviting visitors to delve into the rich history of Blackpool’s Winter Gardens at its Quadriga Gallery, with Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Head of Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield Library.

Professor Toulmin, a leader in entertainment history, will be discussing the history of the Winter Gardens - one of Blackpool’s most famous landmarks. Visitors will learn about the architects and designers involved, the fascinating story of the treasures inside, and the abundance of stars that have graced its stage over the years.

The event forms part of the Blackpool: The Wonderland of the World exhibition (4 July – 27 August), which celebrates the architecture of Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens, their role in the history of light entertainment, and their repair and restoration. The exhibition has been initiated through the partnership of English Heritage and Blackpool Council.

Set on the top two floors of the Arch, The Quadriga Gallery is named after the enormous bronze sculpture of the Angel of Peace and her four-horsed chariot which crowns the monument.
Lucy Hutchings, Events Manager at English Heritage, says: “The Winter Gardens are synonymous with the heritage of Blackpool, and we’re delighted to welcome Professor Toulmin to Wellington Arch to share her expert knowledge on the landmark with our visitors, for what will be an insightful and very interesting discussion.”
