For hundreds of years, St Mary’s church bells have been rung to mark significant events in the lives of individuals, families, and the wider community. They are used weekly to welcome Sunday worshippers and to celebrate weddings, and this year also heralded the Queen’s Jubilee and the start of the London Olympics. The current set of ten bells is around 150 years old and in need of significant restoration so that they can continue to be used safely for the next 100 years.

As part of the fundraising activities organised by the local bell ringers, this concert brings the East London band Kuma Lisa to St Mary’s church. Kuma Lisa creates music that playfully blends the uneven rhythms of the Balkans with lyrical, jazz-infused chords: western folk meets Bulgarian folklore. The band is Mariana Bogdanova (vocals and percussion), Rupert Gillett (strings) and Rob Stutterheim (keys), with special guest Dave Schulman on clarinet.
