Michel Legrand

Pay tribute to the era-defining composer at an evening of jazz and cinema classics with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra and special guests. With James Pearson at the helm, the Orchestra is joined by celebrated songstress Alison Moyet, multiple Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman, rising jazz star Richard Hadfield and renowned classical violinist Tasmin Little, and many more guests still to be announced. A three-time Oscar and five-time Grammy Award winner, Legrand’s unique ear for a memorable tune and his towering skills as a jazz pianist and composer are honoured in powerful arrangements of some of his greatest hits, including The Windmills of Your Mind, Ray Blues, Summer of 42, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Dingo Rock and Yentl. Following Legrand’s death in January, this concert, which was to have been a celebration of his international standing as a jazz musician, now becomes a tribute to his everlasting impact on 20th century music; unforgettable melodies imprinted on the history of jazz, song, and film music. Beginning his meteoric rise to fame as accompanist to Maurice Chevalier, Legrand went on to be at the forefront of the French new wave, collaborating with Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Demy, with whom he invented a new genre of film music. Legrand’s association with Ronnie Scott’s went back many years; he frequently appeared at the club with his renowned trio. The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra’s relationship with Legrand was cemented in 2017 during a four-day residency at Ronnie Scott’s which was an immediate sell-out and received rave reviews. Legrand held historic sessions with Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Phil Woods and Stéphane Grappelli, and meetings with the big names in classical music (Kiri Te Kanawa, Jessye Norman, Maurice André) and easy listening (Yves Montand, Barbra Streisand, Charles Aznavour). His songs were also sung by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong and Liza Minnelli, Legrand’s scores combined sophistication and the experimental ambition of jazz, creating some of the most memorable music in the movies.

★★★★★ ‘Astonishing… startling story of a heavenly ‘visitation’’ The Guardian In 1981 at Kibeho College in Rwanda, a young girl claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary who warned her of the unimaginable: Rwanda becoming hell on Earth. She was ignored by her friends and scolded by her school but then another student saw the vision, and another, and the impossible appeared to be true. Giving a haunting insight into the extraordinary true events that captured the world’s attention, this vibrantly theatrical meditation on faith, doubt and miracles was hailed as ‘the most important play of the year’ by The Wall Street Journal when it premiered in New York in 2014. OUR LADY OF KIBEHO is the latest work from Olivier Award-winning writer Katori Hall, whose previous plays include Tina: The Tina Turner Musical and The Mountaintop. Marking 25 years since the Rwandan genocide, this striking drama now has its London premiere at Stratford East in a remount of James Dacre’s critically-acclaimed production. Dacre is Artistic Director of Royal & Derngate, Northampton and premiered Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop (Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2010).

Best remembered for playing Mr Banks in Disney's classic film Mary Poppins, David Tomlinson was renowned for playing the classic English gent, forthright, proper, and a loveable fool. The man who portrayed one of cinema's most famous patriarchs was defined by his relationship with his own father - a remote eccentric, who was hiding an extraordinary tragicomic secret. THE LIFE I LEAD sees Miles Jupp, one of Britain's leading comics and actors (Mock the Week, The News Quiz, Rev, The Durrells) bring David Tomlinson's remarkable story to life. Leopoldstadt
Where: Wyndham's Theatre
Vienna in 1900 was the most vibrant city in Europe, humming with artistic and intellectual excitement and a genius for enjoying life. A tenth of the population were Jews. A generation earlier they had been granted full civil rights by the Emperor, Franz Josef. Consequently, hundreds of thousands had fled from the Pale and the pogroms in the East and many found sanctuary in the crowded tenements of the old Jewish quarter, Leopoldstadt. It was not to last. Half a century later, this family, like millions of others, has re-discovered what it means to be Jewish in the first half of the 20th century. LEOPOLDSTADT is a passionate drama of love, family and endurance. It is Stoppard's most humane and heart-breaking play.
