In the early 1970s a group of North Islington residents got
together in a plight to save their homes from demolition and to do something about the high crime among their young people. The neighbourhood was close to a slum. Many buildings were dilapidated. Who would want to live here? The council’s solution was to raise to the ground residential streets and expand Whittington Park. Local people thought differently, and out of this community endeavour came about a grass roots movement that transformed the area, for the people nearby and for the generations that followed.
Discover this fascinating history through black & white
photographs forming part of the Whittington Park Community Association Archive (soon to be handed over, on loan, to
Bishopsgate Institute), first hand accounts from founding
members of the association and recent pictures by Tim Coles of individuals using the centre today.
