In its 66th year UCOpera is continuing its popular tradition of staging rarely performed operas with this year’s production of one of Giuseppe Verdi’s lesser known masterpieces Aroldo. Performing for the second time at the beautiful Theatre Royal Stratford East, the cast and orchestra, composed of both professionals and members of the student body, will be led by musical director Charles Peebles, with direction by Pia Furtado.

Making its debut in 1857 and last performed in Spain in 2009, UCO’s production of Aroldo will see its original setting in Britain during the Crusades brought to the present day. On returning to his homeland, Aroldo finds his beloved Mina in a state of great agitation as she confesses to having had an affair with the adventurous Godvino, a guest of her father Egberto. Afraid of the wrath of Mina’s loved ones, Godvino escapes having to sword fight with Egberto and runs away, taking Mina with him. Through the exploration of love, hatred and betrayal the audience is taken on a journey to discover Mina’s fate – will she be punished for her sin or will Aroldo, overtaken by love, find it in his heart to forgive her? This performance will be sung in Italian.
