Folk & Flowers Concert

Folk & Flowers is for the 3rd year taking part in the Chelsea Fringe at Oxford House.

The alternative gardens festival which runs concurrently with the Chelsea flower show, celebrates all the community and guerrilla gardening going on, and encourages links between gardens and art, literature and music.

Folk & Flowers is an evening of folk music specially compiled to complement the fringe - to celebrate gardens, landscape and nature. The music will range from the traditional to the contemporary, the serious to hilarious - and show how nature is central to folk.
There is a whole language in folk music built around plants & flowers – roses for love, willows for weeping and rue for regret – but we will also unearth songs that look at how land and cultivation has been viewed over the centuries

The event is a collaboration between an ensemble of folk singers & musicians who have come together especially for this evening.

Hazel Askew: 2011 Spiral Earth Award for Best Female Singer
Hazel is a singer, musician and composer from London.
She regularly performs in a longstanding duo with her sister Emily as The Askew Sisters, playing traditional English music and songs on fiddle, melodeon and concertina. Together, they have released three critically acclaimed albums, the most recent of which In the Air or the Earth won Best Traditional Album at the Spiral Earth Awards 2015.

She is also a third of popular vocal harmony trio Lady Maisery, who were nominated for the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012.

Carol Anderson: Fiddle player extraordinaire.
Carol is a highly regarded fiddle player from Aberdeenshire. She has a distinctive style combining East Coast and West Coast influences, stemming from her early tuition from Jean-Ann Callender, a native of Lochaber, and later tuition at summer schools from Aonghas Grant. She has a keen interest in Scottish pipe music and this is reflected in her repertoire.

As part of Oxford House's programme for the festival, we have organised a new exhibition in collaboration with four completely different artists. 'Ode to Nature' will be open for art and nature lovers at Oh! Gallery from the 20th of May to the 4th of June.
