COSMIC LATTE LULLABY INSTALLATION BY SALLY BUCHANAN AT CHELSEA COLLEGE OF ARTS 12-15TH JULY

Sally Buchanan,http://www.sallybuchanan.co.uk a London based multi media artist and a 2007 graduate of Central Saint Martins. She combines conceptual principles with craft and a dash of wit to make sculptures, site specific installations, embroideries and art. Her work is eclectic and original.

Her latest project is COSMIC LATTE LULLABY an open air installation comprising a highly reflective, aluminium coated, Mylar film draped like a blanket over a scaffolding frame. This room or viewing chamber represents an observatory from which to view the 'Celestial sky'. There is one large significant central fenestration in the ceiling, creating a main source of light and myriad tiny fenestration in the rest of the roof. It will be semi-sheltered but connected to the elements. The view from the interior will be almost like an other worldly experience.

The walls and ceiling being semi reflective and translucent will create a surreal veil of silver over the normal sky and the fenestrations and central light shaft will permit multiple internal reflections. The Lullaby is the sound of the space blanket crackling in the breeze and much more subtly the idea that the current politically and scientifically manufactured version of a description of the reality of The Universe puts us quietly to sleep. The installation plays with the belief that the simple perception of light can be very easily manipulated to create an environmental illusion.

This exciting innovative experience will be situated on the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground opposite Tate Modern and will be part of FLUX,http://www.fluxexhibition.com a contemporary art exhibition featuring 90 specially selected contemporary artists at Chelsea College of Arts, 16 John Islip St, Westminster, LONDON. SW1P 4JU from 12th-16th July. For information about COSMIC LATTE see here

COSMIC LATTE is the name given to colour of the Universe. In 2001, two scientists Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry (funded by The David and Lucille Packard Foundation) were analysing the light emitted from different galaxies when interestingly they discovered that most stars were formed about 5 billion years ago and they also determined that the overall colour of the universe was greenish white. In 2002 they corrected their calculations to a slightly beigish white. The colour is denoted by #fff8e7 and apparently it’s a time dependent measurement, its the sum of all the light (as seen from earth) emitted from over 200,000 galaxies. The colour was published in the Washington Post and several readers sent in names for the new colour. Peter Drum was sitting in Starbucks reading the Post and he noticed it was the same colour as his latte and he came up with the names Cappuccino Cosmico and Cosmic Latte. (Ref: Wikipedia)
