In celebration of International Coffee Day (1 October 2017), six of the largest bioscience societies in the UK are organising a two-day public event showcasing current areas of coffee research.

Science and the Future of Coffee (Thursday evening): An evening with leading UK scientists, this event will demonstrate how science can help guide the future of the coffee industry. The public talks will be followed by Q&A session and a coffee-themed drinks reception.

Speakers and topics include:

• Dr Aaron P. Davis, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Coffee under threat from climate change
• Prof. Jeremy Haggar, University of Greenwich:
Best practices in sustainable farming, from shade-grown coffee, certification schemes to ecosystem services
• Dr Charlotte Mills, King’s College London: The impact of coffee on the health of our hearts
• Dr Claudio Avignone-Rossa, University of Surrey: Recycling coffee waste to produce energy

Free coffee exhibition (Friday morning): Scientists and coffee experts will take visitors on a coffee journey from crop to cup through a number of exhibits, experiments and interactive activities. An event in support of Macmillan Cancer Support’s national coffee morning, visitors can enjoy free coffee and show their support.

Highlights include:
• A sneak preview of how coffee waste could be the biofuel of the future
• A ‘super-tasting’ session exploring how genetics and coffee production affect our taste
• Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Union Hand-Roasted Coffee showcasing their latest coffee project
• Exploration of the role of microbes in the coffee journey, from fermentation during production to bioconversion of waste
