A great time to visit for a walk as our expert warden can point out the seasonal wildlife on the reserve.

Some might think that winter isn’t the best time to go looking for wildlife but this cold season actually boasts opportunities to spot some of the most beautiful birds. Flocks of over-wintering birds such as teal and wigeon can be seen grazing along the grass banks and high numbers of colourful shoveler can be spotted dabbling on the main lake. These ducks will be employing their fascinating feeding strategy of swimming in circles and creating mini whirlpools in the water to bring food to the surface.

So dress up warm and join our expert warden to discover the amazing wildlife that lives in the heart of London.

You might even spot one or two other rarities on the reserve such as bearded tits or waxwings. Or get a glimpse of the elusive bitterns hiding out in the reed beds – with up to six spending the winter here each year you stand a good chance of seeing one.

What’s more, you’ll learn more about how our wardens manage the reserve and habitats for the wetland animals and plants that you see.
