Community singers London Sacred Harp continue a living tradition of social shape-note singing using the Sacred Harp, a song book of folk hymns from the American South written in four-part harmony. Although the songs are Christian, this music is sung by people all faiths and no faith who fall for its poetry on themes of life, death and the hereafter. Variously described as 'Handel for Hillbillies' and 'Musical Southern gothic', this style is characterised by raw harmonies and ecstatic, full voiced singing. Sacred Harp is not rehearsed or performed, sung solely with and for the participants. Singers of any ability and vocal range, from complete beginners to consummate professionals, are invited to take part and experience the roaring sound of the Hollow Square. Find us in the basement of Heath Street Baptist Church. Just turn up and sing up!
