A NEW PLAY WRITTEN BY NICOLE ACQUAH RESPONDS TO THE STATEMENT: “RACISM AND SEXISM DON’T EXIST

For a Black Girl is a bold new play which talks unflinchingly about issues facing our country today. With six actors and over 60 characters, the show fuses spoken word, interviews and movement to tell the stories of BAME citizens within the UK.

“I used to wear my colour with anger, with defensiveness, like armour…”

This semi-autobiographical piece of new writing explores female sexuality, violence towards women and the staggering effect of everyday racism. From the bookstore to house parties, the play travels through a myriad of situations in which misogynoir is alive and kicking.

Writer Nicole Acquah also performs in the play, sharing her stories and the stories of others onstage.

For a Black Girl premiered at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2017. They are an emerging company of theatre-makers, many of whom graduated from their MA course at Central in December 2017, making VAULT their biggest performance since graduation. Between them, This Is It Theatre have performed, devised and toured in Finland, Malta, England, Central and Latin America.
