The Award winning Japanese singer Yuko Yokoi arrived in London 19 years ago to complete her Masters in Jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance...and never left. On graduation she received the TCM Trust and Archers Scholarship and since that time has also gone on to win the Angela Carrington Award for vocalists. She has performed at numerous high profile venues around London, including The Vortex, The Spice Of Life Soho, The Pheasantry, St Martin-In-The Fields, Cafe in The Crypt, Richmix and Oliver's Jazz bar with the likes of Barry Green, Renato D'Aiello, Eriko Ishihara and Alan Weekes, whilst also running the annual charity concert ‘JAZZ+JAPAN’. Although based in London she still returns to her native Japan to teach and perform, including reaching the finals of the Jazz Vocal Queen Contest 2008 in Kobe. Although trained as a jazz singer Yuko's other great passion is Brazilian music and tonight she launches her debut album "Verde", which not only features classic jazz and Brazilian songs but also her own excellent, heavily Brazilian influenced, originals. The music on offer this evening will reflect the album, featuring many of Yuko's favourite artists, such as Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Ivan Lins, Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winston as well, of course, as her own co-written originals. Yuko likes to describe the music she makes as "an essence of the Japanese philosophy "wabi sabi" - a pursuit of embracing both the imperfection and transience of life, flowing effortlessly through the performance". Unsurprsingly, accompanying her this evening will be an International band of some of the finest exponents of Jazz and Brazilian music in the country, Duncan Eagles (UK) sax, Matt Robinson (UK) piano, Ife Tolentino (Brazil) guitar, Davide Mantovani (Italy) bass and Adriano Adewale(Brazil) percussion. Following this launch Yuko is off to tour in both Japan and Brazil, so grab the chance to hear this fine artist while you can.
