Soho Music Month Free Walking Tours

Discover the hidden secrets and stories behind Carnaby and Soho, from street art, to 14th century plague pits to 18th century brothels. Not to mention the outrageous 1960s shops that made Carnaby Street groovy and put it on the cover of Time Magazine in 1966 during this free walking tour through Soho and Carnaby.

The tour begins in the heart of Soho outside Wardour Street’s Flamingo Club. This edgy club hosted pimps, prostitutes and gangsters and was big on the 1950s Ska scene. We’ll drop by Ronnie Scott’s - one of the world’s most iconic jazz venues and, later, the Nest Club, where they invented the Hand Jive, made so famous by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the 1978 hit musical Grease. En-route we’ll take in an eclectic mix of Joseph Haydn, the Sex Pistols and Professor Green through to the infamous Deal Real record store where Kanye West and Amy Winehouse performed.

Soho not only provided the sound stage for the music, it also helped each musician hone a carefully-crafted image. 1960s outfitters like Vince’s Menswear and Lord John both broke the fashion mold and kitted out the bands of the day. Contemporary Soho tailors like Mark Powell continue to make suits for music masters like Mick Jagger and Paul Weller. Berwick Street’s Oliver Spencer is famous for employing musicians at his ground-breaking fashion shows.
