Susie Hamilton’s book, ‘ON MARGATE SANDS: paintings & drawings based on T.S.Eliot’s The Waste Land’ will be launched at Paul Stolper Gallery in Bloomsbury, near where Eliot worked at Faber and where he lived in Bedford Place and Bury St. The event will feature an ‘in conversation’ with broadcaster and art critic Charlotte Mullins who has written a long essay for the book. ON MARGATE SANDS takes its inspiration from At the Violet Hour (part of Turner Contemporary’s ‘Journeys with The Waste Land’), a 2018 exhibition at Nayland Rock Hotel, Margate for which Hamilton hung works from floor to ceiling in Room 416. Her paintings and drawings respond to the fragmented and diverse nature of the poem and range from depictions of the sordid to the luminous, from the gloom of Hades to the dazzling light of ‘the hyacinth garden’. The book includes examples of Hamilton’s earlier work since The Waste Land is a presence in many former series: solitary figures in wilderness, figures with shadows, figures on beaches and paintings based on The Tempest.
