Ceramics 274: Collective moves to a new, larger space for Winter 2018 pop-up

For 12 Days this December, the Ceramics 274 collective of ten London-based ceramic artists will be showcasing their latest collections in a new, larger space at 61 Hackney Road.

It’s been a busy year for the group, with a growing number of commissions, collaborations and exhibitions for all members. As their individual careers grow and develop, they are keen to evolve their work as a collective. This years’ expanded Winter popup will display the refinement and evolution of the contrasting styles and approaches of the ten artists.

The shop will be selling unique modern homewares - including some very special one-offs from all of the makers. A presentation of the cutting edge of modern ceramics in a beautifully curated space. From modern to traditional, wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces, the collections on offer cover a wide range of styles. Buyers can pick up work from their favourite maker, or mix and match pieces to create unique, contemporary collections.

The shop is designed and run by the makers themselves - customers are invited to come and talk about ceramics with them, and get the lowdown on materials, inspirations and techniques.

The international makers involved formed Ceramics 274 after meeting at shared studio spaces. Some are traditionally trained; Grace McCarthy is a Camberwell College of Arts graduate. Others come to ceramics via other mediums; Natascha Madeiski is an architect and designer who experiments with innovative techniques.

The unique and contrasting styles of the ten makers will create a compelling collection - minimal thrown tableware from Andrea Roman; porcelain vessels from Ben Sutton; earthiness and whimsy from Ned Davies; Sarah Hall’s intricately assembled homeware - the space will be a fascinating insight into modern ceramic practice. The lines between function and art are blurred by much of the work: ragged edge vessels from Lisa Ommanney; Arjan van Dal’s richly hued dyed porcelain work; elegant marbled pieces from Ida Riveros; Ditte Blohm’s intricately sculpted porcelain.
