London has a laugh in aid of Northern Irish school kids

Top comedy stars Ed Byrne, Grainne Maguire, Wendy Wason, Carl Donnelly and Lou Sanders will come together and stand up for a for the Integrated Education Fund in November.

Five star comedy acts are getting their lines in order this November 2 at the London Irish Centre in Camden Square to help streamline the education system in Northern Ireland.

The comedians hope to create awareness of the divided education system that is still very much present in Northern Ireland. They also hope to raise funds for the Integrated Education Fund, a charity that was set up in 1992 to support parents in their bid to educate NI children together.

Today 93% of all schools there are mostly one-denominational. It’s a startling statistic given 20 years have passed since the Good Friday Agreement when NI politicians promised to to “facilitate and encourage integrated education” in a bid to end division in Northern Ireland.

And 50 years on from The Troubles began, five comedians will take to a London stage to support the movement that has lacked the backing from the Northern Ireland Executive.

Stand Up for Integrated Education, on Friday 02 November in the London Irish Centre, Camden Square, London presents an all-star comedic lineup that promises a belly full of laughs. There will be no preaching, just a diverse range of humour all for a good cause.

Wendy Wason, an established actress and stand up comedian has organised the gig. Married to NI Lucky Man actor, Stephen Hagan, the Scottish performer says she was dumbfounded to hear that 93% of Northern Ireland schools still reflect one religion or culture.

She said: “I was really shocked about it. I didn’t know that kids were educated differently in Northern Ireland. I know there are a lot of available places in Catholic and Protestant schools yet integrated schools are oversubscribed. It just doesn’t make sense.

“I think some of the political parties in Northern Ireland have a vested interest to keep things separate otherwise they won’t be needed but kids shouldn’t ever be involved in that and they shouldn’t be separated at school,” she said.

Commenting on the line-up for the show, IEF Chief Executive Tina Merron said:
“Thank you Ed, Grainne, Wendy, Carl and Lou for supporting our work through Stand Up for Integrated Education. It’s going to be a really good night out with star performers and guaranteed laughter and it’s already attracting a lot of interest.”
