Check out a review of last year's Millfield Panto - Jack & The Beanstalk.

"Why wasn’t the original tale of Jack and the Beanstalk funny as well as entertaining for children? ”Oh, yes it was”. Well, actually it wasn’t. It just contained a moral or two. But the production on offer this Christmas at Edmonton’s Millfield Theatre certainly ticks the funny box.

Everything is there you’d expect – the obligatory, quirky laughs such a part of a festive pantomime. With a sharp, cleverly devised script, this version of a much-loved story for all the family certainly delivers this year. And, through the effective use of a number of popular songs, there will be as much foot-tapping as laughing this Christmas.

That is if the opening night is anything to go by. Dame Dottie Trott was played by an understudy, who happened to be none other than the production’s writer himself. However, the show had to go on – well, open – and Marc Day gave an amusingly (meant in the best possible way) accomplished performance.

The same can certainly be said of Alex Scott Fairley, who starred as the dastardly Fleshcreep. Any good panto needs a good baddie, so to speak, and the audience certainly felt it necessary to boo him... a great sign! It was absolutely deserved, with him producing a performance full of humour and mischief.

In fact, all members of the cast gave giant performances, from Fairy Deluxe and Jill, who both displayed strong vocal ability, to Jill’s love interest Jack and his brother Simple Simon. Speaking of “giant”, the animatronic used for Giant Blunderbore was stunning, and a real bonus especially for all the kids watching. Impressive special effects.

Christmas pantomime at the Millfield never seems to disappoint – and the standard gets higher every year, no beanstalk pun intended!" - Enfield Independent 23.11.17
