With an insatiable appetite for sex and booze, Baal lives his life for the moment. From stage to sewer he leaves a trail of devastation and recklessly dispensed lyricism in his wake.

Bertolt Brecht's first full length play, Baal, rages with the ?re of youth. Nothing escapes young Brecht's burning wit and self-immolating irony here. An anti-hero and cult artist at odds with the world, Baal indulges in fleshy decadence spewing surreal poetry and bawdy libretto.

Drunken and depraved, he strips romanticism bare and throws it onto the shit-heap. The secretions that stain Baal's world glisten to reveal the excesses of youth and blind idolatry of creative genius.

Baal tells the story of a travelling musician who wrecks the lives of anyone and everyone he comes into contact with, sleeping around and drinking himself into oblivion.

Whilst Baal’s many sexual relationships and his use and abuse of power could portray his as the stereotypical bloke, this production explores gender and sexuality politics, through androgynous casting.

Featuring a soundtrack of rock classics, performed live by an actor-musician ensemble, the music will take you into the world of the rock star; where the cult of Baal’s celebrity is more important than the actions he takes and the lives he ruins.

By creating a wild environment on stage that reflects the degradation of Baal, from debauchery to infamy, through the use of the elements, director Robert J. Stanex is bringing the didacticism of Brecht’s writing to the forefront, writhing in dirt, drowning in fluid and revelling in the birth of Epic Theatre.

This is Sedos’ first venture into Brecht, however we are no strangers to tackling difficult subject matter or complex theatrical conventions. We are excited to present this interpretation of such an iconic writer and titan of theatre.

Baal contains strong language, nudity and scenes of a violent and sexual nature.

This amateur production of Baal is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD.
