A new year is always a time to think about making positive changes – and volunteering is a great way to start. Meet inspiring local charities looking for friendly Hackney residents to give their time to good causes and discover how you can get involved.

From baking bread to fixing bikes, there are hundreds of different roles on offer across the borough. Whether you can give an hour a week or an hour a month, VCH can help you find your ideal role. Taking place from 12pm, you can pop in on your lunch break or on your way to pick up the kids.

This is a free event, open to all, so children are welcome, plus refreshments – put the date in your diary, then pop by and meet us!

To find out more about volunteering and how to get involved, visit www.vchackney.org, or follow Volunteer Centre Hackney on Twitter @VCHackney or on Facebook.

Volunteer Centre Hackney works with over 350 charities and community groups across Hackney, who are in need of valuable volunteers, who provide the core of their day-to-day activities.

Situated in the heart of Dalston, VCH’s aim is to encourage and develop the roles of volunteers within the community. In 2018 VCH helped over 1900 people to find out about volunteering, and placed over 450 of these locally. By matching people to causes they are interested in, they hope to increase the spirit of community within Hackney.

VCH also delivers a number of specialised projects including Step Up, a volunteering programme which provides mentors to support people with mental health needs to move into volunteering and paid employment. Aim Higher supports people living in Hackney who are not working to access paid and voluntary employment opportunities, education and training. Their neighbourhood skill-sharing initiative Our Place, helps residents on the New Kingshold Estate to set up and run community activities.
