The quartet by Mozart, who practically invented the medium, was originally rejected by the publisher as 'uncommercial and too challenging'. Now it appears as a superbly balanced three-movement composition, and a work of genius.

Almost a century later, Fauré followed in Mozart's footsteps to write one of the loveliest piano quartets of all time. His first piano quartet, despite being in a minor key, is predominantly positive in tone, though the Adagio hints at the emotional turmoil in Fauré’s personal life.
