This series of three concerts curated by Cathy Lane for Reel Lives will feature performances and works from emergent and established sound artists from the UK and Europe.

Through these events you will be invited to sonically engage with aspects of the voice and language, places near and far and recent and current events through the different styles, ears and perspectives of each of the artists. The performances will take place in the main gallery space at LCC which will feature an eight channel system surrounding the audience to reconfigure the gallery as an immersive listening space.

Artists include Ain Bailey, Caroline Bergvall, Kate Carr, Viv Corringham, Poulomi Desai, Caroline Devine, Lisa Hall and Hannah Kemp-Welch, Cathy Lane, Lina Lapelyte, Brona Martin, Else M’bala and Karen Power.

Concert 1: Voices – material and virtual

This concert will feature works and performances from Caroline Bergvall, Caroline Devine and Cathy Lane.

Caroline Bergvall is a French-Norwegian artist, poet and vocal performer based in London. Her work frequently develops through exploring material traces, literary documents and linguistic detail, language and literary history, sites and histories, hidden or forgotten knowledges. Her sparse textual, spatial and audio works often expose hidden or difficult historical/political events. Caroline works across artforms, media and languages.

Cathy Lane is a composer, sound artist and academic. Her work uses spoken word, field recordings and archive material to explore aspects of our listening relationship with each other and the multiverse. She is currently focused on how sound relates to the past, our histories, environment and our collective and individual memories from a feminist perspective. Cathy is Professor of Sound Arts and University of the Arts London and Director of CRiSAP (Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice), UAL.

Caroline Devine’s practice explores voices, sounds and signals that are ordinarily imperceptible, silenced or in some way absent, such as natural radio emissions, solar resonances, electromagnetic signals and hidden voices. She has a particular interest in the use of space as a compositional parameter and site-specific sound installations include a display case of 19th century Indian instruments in the South Asia Gallery of the V&A, 18th Century Perrott’s Folly, The Open University campus grounds, Alan Turing Hut 8 at Bletchley Park and the air conditioning system of Temple Contemporary Art Gallery in Philadelphia, USA. Devine has been shortlisted twice for a BASCA British Composer Award for her works ‘5 Minute Oscillations of the Sun’ and ‘On Air’. She is Creative Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Birmingham where she is developing work in response to the NASA TESS mission.

This is a seated event with limited capacity. Booking is essential. Supported by CRiSAP (Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice).

This event forms part of Reel Lives, a programme of discussions, screenings, performances, interactive activities and more presented by the Screen School at London College of Communication.
