This February the Geffrye Museum are screening a pair of non-traditional love stories for the modern age: Love is Strange and Sleeping with Other People in their beautiful Georgian Room. Exploring ageing, infidelity, loss and sexual chemistry, this pair is the perfect antidote to a schmaltzy Valentine’s.

All tickets include a drink & popcorn!

Love is Strange
John Lithgow (The Crown, Terms of Endearment) and Alfred Molina (An Education, Chocolat) shine in Ira Sachs’ (Little Men, Keep the Lights On) tender and deeply-moving meditation on long-term relationships. After 40 years together, Ben and George can finally marry, but they are heartbreakingly wrenched apart when George loses his job. As the couple turn to friends and family for support, Sachs and co-writer Mauricio Zacharias’ screenplay imbues the film with the humanity and subtle humour ingrained in the fullness of life. Love is Strange is a richly poignant film about commitment, love, ageing and loss – offering a reminder of the importance of genuine human connections at a time when they may seem fragile and fleeting.

Sleeping with Other People
Crackling with hilarious repartee and seductive sexual chemistry, Alison Brie (GLOW, Community) and Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, Saturday Night Live) star as endearing self-saboteurs in this very modern romantic comedy. Lainey and Jake bond over their shared histories of one-night stands and infidelity, but, despite promising to keep things platonic, there is undeniable emotion within their increasing flirtations. Writer/Director Leslye Headlund’s (Bachelorette, Russian Doll) refreshingly funny and non-judgemental film captures the challenges of love and relationships in the 21st century and is the perfect antidote to Valentine’s schmaltz, with a stellar supporting cast including Adam Scott (The Good Place, Parks and Recreation) and Amanda Peet (Togetherness, A Lot Like Love).
