NOW Gallery, Greenwich Peninsula’s cultural platform for exciting design, art and fashion exhibitors, welcomes its latest exhibition, The Mouse and His Child, by artist-led creative practice Studio Morison.

Free to enter, from 28 February until 28 April 2019, the gallery will be transformed into an immersive sculptural reading room inspired by the home featured in Russell Hoban’s children’s novel and the exhibition’s namesake, The Mouse and His Child. The installation explores the human experience of fiction with a collection of children’s storybooks written by authors more commonly known for their adult fiction with the aim to unravel the perception of narratives and storytelling through the lens of the reader.

The gallery space will be transformed into a sculptural and functional space, stepping between art and design practices. Inspired by the home the Mouse, his child and their friends finally make for themselves at the end of their journey Studio Morison have similarly created a space that “assumes a look of wild confidence and reckless bravado”.

Central to the exhibition will be a huge rug for reading, lit by a floating sculptural form and bespoke stools and reading tables. The aesthetic will manifest this unexpected literature blind spot, drawing both adult and children readers alike and creating a space of warmth that speaks of child-like things with an adult undercurrent, just like the books themselves.

Coinciding with the exhibition will be a series of literary events hosted by NOW Gallery which will further explore the themes of adulthood and childhood in fiction, These nights will range from lectures to book clubs, from spoken word nights to literary dinners, each event drawing from a particular children’s book in the library, and welcoming both adults and children of all ages. This includes:
• As part of SAMPLE, Greenwich Peninsula’s designer sale with a difference, Kit Wilmans Fegradoe will be experimenting with harmonious and textured sonic landscapes and reaching out towards lesser known stories through sound. A special guest reader to be confirmed. 2nd March

A curated evening of Spoken Word, with Cecilia Knapp, Mina West, Alex Daykin and Kareem Parkins Brown, with discussion and performance on Thursday 7 March

• The Bloomsbury Evening with The Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain and Maggie Humm presenting on Thursday 11 April

• A Reading and Q+A with Kate Wakeling on Thursday 18 April

Each event is ticketed at £3, with all proceeds going to the BookTrust. The full programme is listed on the NOW Gallery website and if you’re interested in attending we’d be more than happy to facilitate this.
