Zabludowicz Collection is delighted to announce the 2019 annual commission solo exhibition by American artist Shana Moulton.

In her first institutional UK solo show Moulton will present a new video work commissioned by Zabludowicz Collection, alongside selected key projects from across her highly influential oeuvre. Included is ‘Whispering Pines ?’, a multi-channel video installation (in collaboration with Nick Hallett) first realised in this form at Galerie Gregor Staiger, Zurich in 2018. This is the latest iteration of the opera project ‘Whispering Pines 10’ that began in 2010 at The Kitchen, New York.

Moulton uses video, sculptural installation, costume and performance to create a distinctive psychic and aesthetic realm anchored around her alter-ego Cynthia – a series she commenced on in 2002. Beset by hypochondria, agoraphobia, and general helplessness in the face everyday life, we join Cynthia on flights of imagination that seek to escape the mundane. Cynthia’s domestic environment is central to all Moulton’s works, a home populated by objects and ornaments that range across ancient totems, popular modern art, Californian new age ideologies and dollar-store kitsch.

Blossoming into sometimes joyful, sometimes troubling psychedelic escapades, Moulton’s narratives chart both Cynthia’s personal tribulations and the interwoven relationship between spirituality and consumerism in contemporary society. These lo-fi and formally experimental works flatten binaries of cultural taste and confuse chronological time, resulting in a new realm with its own internal logic of colour, texture and sound. Moulton’s perceptively humorous and emotionally affecting approach consistently reflects on themes that are at the forefront of cultural debate today: the personal wellness industry, ecological awareness and alternative models of living.
