MODE 2019: Julia Holter (solo), Eli Keszler, Tashi Wada Group

The 2019 edition of MODE London opens with an evening of freewheeling experimentation in the beautiful Round Chapel, Hackney.

JULIA HOLTER (solo)

Julia Holter is a boundless experimentalist whose recorded output blurs the lines between indie, traditional pop, modern composition and electronic music. From her 2011 full-length debut ‘Tragedy’ through 2015’s landmark ‘Have You in My Wilderness’ to last year’s critically-acclaimed ‘Aviary’, the LA-based composer and multi-instrumentalist exudes an ambitious and uncompromising dedication to experimentation that continues to evolve in scope and sound with each new release. We are delighted to host a special one-off solo show featuring Julia on grand piano and voice at the beautiful Round Chapel Church.

ELI KESZLER

Eli keszler is a new york based artist, composer and percussionist. Keszler’s music, installations, and visual work have appeared at the Whitney Museum, Lincoln Center, Mit List Center, 67 Ludlow, Victoria & Albert Museum, Sculpture Center, The Kitchen, South London Gallery, Hessel Museum, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Luma-Foundation, Barbican-St. Lukes, Walker Art Center, Lax Art, and greater new york at MOMA PS1. He has released solo records for Shelter Press, Empty Editions, Esp-Disk', PAN and Rel Records. As a composer, Keszler has received commissions from the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Ice Ensemble, Brooklyn String Orchestra and So Percussion. Keszler works with Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurel Halo, Rashad Becker and David Grubbs among others.

TASHI WADA GROUP

Los Angeles-based composer Tashi Wada presents his new group featuring Julia Holter and percussionist Corey Fogel performing music from Wada's new album “Nue” out this fall on Brooklyn-based label RVNG Intl.

In Japanese, ‘nue’ is a mythological chimera with the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and the tail of a snake. In French, nue means naked—stripped of complexity, bare and exposed, but also raw and essential. This duality underlies “Nue.” Released as part of RVNG Intl’s FRKWYS series of intergenerational projects, this collaboration ranges from minimalist bagpipes to otherworldly vocals, creating, in Wada’s words, “a vision, an endless night of dreams, and a personal history of sorts, full of joys and demons.”

From the doubling of tones—and the world of harmonic nuances such an action produces—to the rich interplay between individual musicians, all baring their own personalities and experiences through shared performance, Wada’s compositions allow space for these elements to join and grow. The multipartite creature that is an ensemble melds in the simplicity and purity of the music itself.
