Mercato Metropolitano is the UK’s first sustainable community market based in Elephant and Castle. On the weekend of 14th/15th September, Mercato Metropolitano is hosting We Sustain – a series of workshops, events and talks on ‘The city we want to live in’, in celebration of Mercato’s third anniversary in London.

Highlights from the weekend schedule include:

Saturday 14th – Ted-style talks from experts such as Rachel Kyte, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, covering topics from gender equality to the circular economy.

Saturday 14th – a huge feast made by and for the community using ‘wonky’ or rejected vegetables. Mercato does a huge amount to combat food poverty – and this will be a low-cost meal created by volunteers, who will also get to take home left-over food for their families after taking part.

Sunday 15th – various interactive events, including a French pastry class with Nina Metayer, twice voted France’s best pastry chef and a Michelin star pâtissiere; an introduction to bread-making with ancient wheat; and ‘story time’ for children where refugees tell fairy tales from their home countries.

There will be something for everyone – cookery classes, wine tasting, art exhibitions, yoga, arts & crafts and more for families, friends, and couples, and thought-provoking discussions for anyone interested in learning about issues like food waste, plastic pollution, sustainable cities, urban farming, and the refugee crisis.
