Rachmaninov’s work takes texts from the Russian Orthodox All-Night Vigil, although actually the whole piece only runs for about an hour. It is also known as Rachmaninov's Vespers, although it is only the first six of the fifteen movements that use text from the Russian Orthodox hour of vespers.
The music is stunning: inspired by traditional Russian chant but with gorgeous twentieth century harmonies, giving us a passionate and moving work.
