The Surprising World of Kubrick – Lecture

Join London College of Communication for a lecture and exhibition of objects and films that illuminate surprise in Stanley Kubrick’s productions from Dr. Strangelove to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Eyes Wide Shut.

This talk is complemented by a small exhibition showing surprise in the film design, production and reception of Stanley Kubrick’s work, using artefacts from the Stanley Kubrick Archive held at London College of Communication.

Media constitutes the implantation of a world within a world, one which is increasingly used to disorientate memory, by the digital manipulation of affect through ‘disinformation’ or ‘fake’ news.

The seminar uses Kubrick's methodologies to show how animation and visual effects can reconstruct and reinterpret the Apollo 11 lunar landing as a media event. Such an event creates mass surprise, and a new sphere of meaning by transmitting images of a collective home into the communal home.

The UAL archive of acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Kubrick features material spanning his entire career. Carl Grinter is an animation, visual effects and immersive media designer, supervisor and producer working in the London film network since 1987.

Carl has worked extensively across the commercial and art-oriented worlds, beginning his career in music video using analogue processes prior to developing his career in film production across the digital realm.

His career has been shaped by uncertainty in simulating and replicating the physical world using computer animation software, invention and innovation. Carl completed his first feature length project called Thesis, as part of his practice-based PhD in Immersive Media Design and Production at London College of Communication, UAL.

The media art film was selected for Beyond 2001:New Horizons exhibition celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Stanley Kubrick Archive at London College of Communication and Another Land exhibition at Stanley Picker Galleries at Kingston Museum in May/June 2019. Carl runs an immersive production com-pany Three Wise Monkeys and a Visual Effects Studio CC VFX based in Central London.

This event is taking place as part of ‘Sound & Cinema: Past, Present & Future’ – an exhibition and events programme presented by London College of Communication’s Screen School spanning film, VR, games, TV and sound celebrating 125 years of diversity and creativity within the College.
