Zakia Sewell and Amey St Cyr. explore ancestral trauma in this new theatre performance

The bond between mother and child is perhaps the most natural and profound relationship we can experience. But for Zakia Sewell and her mother – who she’s always called Amey – this relationship has been far from straight-forward.

After many years of disconnection and words unspoken, they’re collaborating to better understand the issues they have had to overcome. Directed by theatre-maker Cathy Sloan, this moving work highlights the kindness of self-care and self-knowledge and the healing that accompanies it.

Voices of the Motherland will be live streamed for audiences to watch online from home.

A very limited number of tickets will be available for this performance live at Free Word with a small socially distanced audience.

Free Word’s new ticket pricing structure aims to honour the work of our artists whilst acknowledging the increased financial pressures our audiences may be experiencing. Simply choose the ticket price that is most accessible to you. We kindly ask that those in a position to purchase a full cost solidarity ticket do so. All Free Word ticket revenue goes directly back into our ongoing programming of under-represented writers, artists and activists.
