One of the City of London’s oldest marketplaces, Leadenhall Market, is putting on a display of mood boosting installations this January, to give Londoners a much-needed uplift in what will be a difficult start to the year.

With the sound of birdsong and special light-bathing spots to be enjoyed, the Market is transforming its unused units and quieter alleys into an uplifting experience for Londoners to enjoy safely, while out for their daily exercise.

The installation forms part of the Market’s ‘wellness month’, which aims to help locals kickstart their year with a healthy mindset and lifestyle, that includes getting a daily dose of fresh air. Special walking routes that go via the Market have been designed to inspire people to make the most of their outdoor exercise, by exploring parts of the city that would usually, particularly at this time of year, be buzzing with workers, visitors and residents.

A stark contrast to the usual sounds of London’s Square Mile, birdsong will be played throughout the Market, Monday to Friday between the hours of 10am and 4pm, while the light bathing spots aim to enlighten people on how colours can affect their mood.

Chair of the Property Investment Board at the City of London Corporation, Tom Sleigh, said: “As an outdoor public space, Leadenhall Market is accessible 24 hours a day and so can still be enjoyed by Londoners who are complying with the Government’s national lockdown restrictions. We may not be able to offer our usual luxurious experience of 35 boutique shops, bars, restaurants and cafes but we want to remind Londoners that we are here for them, as we have been since the 14th century.”

The iconic architecture of Leadenhall’s Victorian wrought iron and glass Market provides a spacious setting for locals to walk through and explore, while being able to stay socially distanced in a well-ventilated area.

London remains under lockdown restrictions. Further details on the restrictions in place are available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/national-lockdown-stay-at-home.
