Paul Doran, one of the most exciting new contemporary artists from Ireland is exhibiting at Fitzrovia’s Zari Gallery this summer in what is proving to be an exhilarating experience of his latest abstract, mixed media artworks.
For Doran echoes from the past come in waves, weaving in and out to form a tapestry of memories. Remnants of the past are etched into our psyches, political systems and environmental surroundings. We are living through a momentous time of turbulent change with pressing issues such as Covid-19, wars, population displacement, the rise of populism, AI and environmental problems such as climate change and the loss of habitats and species. In Web of Echoes Doran responds to these events by depicting repeated, circular forms that confront the viewer in an almost hypnotic manner through a rich range of colours and textures. These could be seen as bubbles of our existence as individuals cohabiting in a society overwhelmed by information, restrictions and conflict.
The seeds of inspiration for this exhibition started in Belfast in 2017 when Doran participated in the acclaimed international, multidimensional exhibition, the No Walls project. In this exhibition in public spaces (including the Titanic Museum, Belfast), German, Irish, French and English artists co-created in what became a true symbol of political reconciliation and trust through aesthetic mediums. A live performance mural was erected between Belfast’s interface gates in No Man’s Land, the wall which separates the two communities. Members of the public participated in the artwork by writing comments and messages of hope on the wall. During this project Doran was given old French posters and industrial linen. This has inspired him to create the mixed media abstractions in A Web of Echoes in what is a highly successful depiction of the current socio-political world events through a courageous, sincere and expressive artistic practice.
