In Conversation – Lubna Chowdhary & David Batchelor

Join us for an evening of conversation between two artists whose work is concerned with colour, urban environment and industrial processes.

The event will take place in person at a Hoxton venue to be announced. Please note in-person tickets are limited to thirty. We are intending to record the event and make it available online.

As part of Lubna Chowdhary's current exhibition at PEER, Erratics – on show until 20 November – the artist will be taking part in an in-conversation event with artist and writer David Batchelor.

The artist-to-artist talk will focus on studio practice, process and use of materials as well as ideas around stylistic and cultural influence.

David Batchelor (b.1955, Dundee. Lives and works in London) In 2013, a major solo exhibition of Batchelor’s two-dimensional work, Flatlands, was displayed at Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh and toured to Spike Island, Bristol. Batchelor’s work was included in the landmark group exhibition Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915 – 2015 at Whitechapel Gallery, London. A separate exhibition of Batchelor's Monochrome Archive (1997-2015) was also on display at Whitechapel Gallery until May 2015. My Own Private Bauhaus, a solo exhibition of sculptures and paintings by Batchelor was presented by Ingleby during the Edinburgh Art Festival, 2019. Batchelor’s portfolio includes a number of major temporary and permanent artworks in the public realm. These include a commission for the British Council headquarters in Hong Kong; Spectrum on the Hill, Seoul, South Korea; a 10-metre high light installation at the Archway Tube Station in London; and a chromatic clock titled Sixty Minute Spectrum installed as the roof of the Hayward Gallery, London. Batchelor has written and edited a number of books including The Luminous and the Grey (2014), Found Monochromes (2010) and Colour (2008) and Chromophobia (2000).

Lubna Chowdhary (b.1964, Tanzania. Lives and works in London) received her BA from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1988, and MA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1991. She received The Sir Eduardo Paolozzi Travel Award in 1990. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently at Art Gallery New South Wales, Sydney (2020); Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai (2020); ICA Milano, Milan (2019); Kochi Biennale, Kochi (2018-2019); Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester (2018). Public collections that hold Chowdhary’s work include Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham; Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; Leicester City Museum, Leicester; M+ Museum, Hong Kong; Mead Gallery, Warwick; Nottingham Castle Museum, Nottingham; Oldham Art Gallery, Oldham; Poole Museum, Dorset. Chowdhary is represented by Jhaveri Contemporary.
