Chris Dowding's #BEACHfest
An evening exploring short intervallic pieces from the ‘BEACH’ project by Chris Dowding - in solo, duo and trio groupings, including renowned UK musicians such as trombonist Annie Whitehead, guitarist Anton Hunter, trumpeter Charlotte Keeffe, drummer Johnny Hunter and others. "#BEACHfest will be a mini-festival exploring pieces from and related to the year-long 'BEACH' subscription project by Chris Dowding that has been running from November 2023 to November 2024.
The project was initiated around solo acoustic trumpet recordings and performances by Chris, from which included uploading a recording to the subscription each month for a year, and which will culminate in a CD release of the whole set of recordings, alongside the whole album being available publicly on Bandcamp. the subscription project also included photography by John Boursnell and others. #BEACHfest will explore the pieces from the project - short intervallic pieces each named after a Norfolk beach - in different groupings, including a duo with Chris and trombonist Kieran McLeod, a trio with two Manchester-based musicians Anton Hunter and Johnny Hunter, a short solo set, and a duo between trombonist Annie Whitehead and trumpeter Charlotte Keeffe.
Chris Dowding is a Norwich-based trumpeter and workshop leader who plays with a range of bands including Natural Causes, Rude 2.0 (with trombonist Annie Whitehead) and The Brass Monkeys (www.8brassmonkeys.co.uk). He has been commissioned by Norfolk and Norwich Festival and Durham Brass Festival. He is joined by a group of musicians with a wide range of experience, from Annie Whitehead’s work with Robert Wyatt and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Anton Hunter’s playing with Beats & Pieces Big Band and his brother Johnny’s work in several groups with pianist Adam Fairhall (including Fragments Trio and the ‘Winifred Atwell Revisited’ project), to Charlotte Keeffe’s recent critically acclaimed work with her Right Here, Right Now quartet and her splashy and colourful solo performances. Kieran McLeod performs regularly with brass bands such as Riot Jazz and Young Pilgrims, alongside experience with pianist Keith Tippett and saxophonist Julian Arguelles.
Join us for an explorative evening, set into a projected backdrop by Norwich-based VJ (and musician) Charlotte Arculus.
