The Library is a smart, luxurious bar inside the Lanesborough Hotel that is often frequented by celebrities and serves a variety of beverages including tea all day. They also have a pianist playing daily from 6.30pm until 10.30pm.

Find out where to get the best brew in town here.

What could be more traditional than afternoon tea at the Lanesborough Hotel with the company of Britain’s only in-house tea sommelier to guide you? The silver service means jackets and shoes unless you want to look like a doofus in front of the tea sipping fraternity you now call friends. And what tea sipping there is to be had. On top of the usual trimmings of scones and finger sandwiches the tea is picked for the season and it’s just as well there’s a master on hand to help you through the mazy menu. All this is just £35.00 per person and you could always make it ‘Irish’ with a glass of Tattinger.

The first thing about the Lanesborough is that it overlooks Hyde Park, which automatically makes it a worthwhile trip in our eyes. However, when you make your way into the Library Bar at the Lanesborough it won’t be Hyde Park you’re interested in anymore. Low lighting, leather bound books, heavy wooden shelves, sofas and thick rugs contribute to a Regency look that is upper-class sophistication personified. Try a bespoke cocktail or settle for the done thing and opt for a vintage cognac or two.

This'll warm your cockles...

If you want your whisky served in a suitably suave situation that will match the price you’re paying for aged single malt, then the Library Bar at The Lanesborough Hotel is the place. Like something straight out of a country manor, the bar is a great place to sip on one of the many rare (and expensive) whiskies that are stocked.

Very disappointed!

The Library Bar used to be a wonderful example of perfect service set in a room that brings to mind a Gentleman's club. A quintessentially British experience.

Sadly the charming Brits have been replaced by smarmy Italians, the worst of whom is managing the door. Not only do they seem to have a select seating policy – not previously the case (so expact to be seated in a lack-lustre annex if the bar is busy), but the previously crisp and courtious service has been replaced by a mediterranian indifference that whilst maintaining an efficiency, can just as easily be found in any club or bar on the high street.

I called the Lanesborough to book a table in the Library Bar a month early, but on arrival was met with a rude and irritable little man who physically blocked our way to the bar and insisted that it 'was not possible' that I had left a booking.

Not the place that I remember; go to the Connaught.
