About Museum of London
The Museum of London is housed in a purpose-built building near London's famous Barbican. Opened in 1974 the Museum of London is the result of the merger between the London Museum and the Guildhall Museum. The Museum documents London from 400,000 years ago to present day. Visitors are asked to step back in time with entire street scenes from history including original artefacts excavated by the museums own archaeological digs.
An exciting "London before London" exhibit looks back on the terrain and people who lived on the land before the city was even conceived. Other permanent exhibits include a Roman interior with original mosaic flooring and a Stuart interior complete with artefacts from the era taken donated by several of the seventeenth century estates around the capital. The Great Fire exhibit show a reconstruction of how London looked before three quarters of the city was destroyed by fire in 1666.
An Art Deco elevator from Selfridges and the Lord Mayors ornate ceremonial coach are among the most striking objects on show. One of the most valuable exhibits is the "Great Horde"- a collection of fine jewels excavated from beneath a local shop. Admission to the Museum of London is free and there is a restaurant and cafeteria on site.
