Greeted by a white dude. Questioned authenticity. Should have trusted my instincts.
Went with the pregnant wife for the lunch special. She ordered dim sum. I wanted the sweet & sour pork, but since we were sharing, pregnant wife convinced me to get the Cantonese chicken with black bean sauce instead. I pick and choose my battles.
Ordered the Cantonese chicken with black bean sauce. When our food arrived, it was pretty clear that it was sweet & sour something. It was pink and had pineapples in it, and more importantly it tasted like sweet & sour, so we asked the host about it.
"That's the Cantonese chicken" he insisted, despite the fact that Cantonese chicken was supposed to come with black bean sauce, which is easily identifiable since it has black beans in it, which ours did not.
We chose not to press the issue, because I had wanted the sweet & sour pork all along. Then the bill came and it clearly said "SS Pork" on it. We then asked white dude again which dish we had been served.
"You had the Cantonese chicken. The receipt says sweet & sour pork because the keys for each are right next to each other on our computer."
This time we were a little bit more insistent, pointing out that 1) what we had was clearly sweet & sour, and 2) tasted a lot more like pork than chicken. We then also pointed out that there are lots of people in London who don't eat pork for religious reasons, and that this sort of snafu would have been unacceptable in those circumstances.
At that point he changed his tune and said "Oh, maybe you did get the pork. We have a chef in the kitchen who doesn't speak much English and he probably made a mistake."
Way to throw your hard-working immigrant coworker under the bus, white dude. You were the one who entered the information wrong, and you were the one who stubbornly refused to own up to it. Even if it was a mistake, you should at least be able to recognize the few limited dishes on your lunch special menu, which
Mr Wing is a real experience; upstairs there is a fountain and plants which hint at what's to come; descending the stairs to the dining area below, you are invited to enter an exotic world of foliage and flowers trailing down from all sides. The Chinese food is good and includes some more exotic dishes too. A takeaway menu is also available.
