If you're on a diet then hit the back button

Jesus provided the fish, Sir Walter Raleigh discovered the potato and we did the rest.

So give thanks to miracles, explorers and beef dripping for the invention of the world’s most famous takeaway and feast your eyes on some of London’s finest places to get it.

There’s a reason The Sun is Britain’s best-selling paper and it’s not for its content, so it must be the headlines. Everyone loves a pun and with Rock and Sole Plaice you’re getting great fish and chips and a tummy tickler to boot. Once all tittering has subsided, savour some of London’s fluffiest chips- double fried in peanut oil (sorry poor allergy sufferers). Loved by tourists and locals alike, it must be good because people keep coming back in spite of the high prices.

As well as arguably being the first song to popularize rap, Fryer’s Delight is a Holborn chip shop famed for its exquisite batter. The dipped fillets are fried in the classic beef dripping, which results in the crispiest of crusts. Portions are generous but this is no frills dining so don’t expect winning smiles to go with those happy portions.

The menu has traditional chip shop fare, and the fish, chips and sides like whitebait and calamari are exceptional. Despite styling itself as an old fashioned chippy it has a distinctly upmarket feel; their first branch in Ravenscourt Park was so successful with critics and the public that they've since opened another in nearby Ealing.

Leave the restaurant alone and head for the takeaway to avoid the inflated prices. Long gone are the days when a bag of chips and a large cod would set you back just one five-pound note, but at least the quality at North Sea Fish lives up to its prices. Cracking open the golden batter of a massive piece of haddock you’re met with downy clouds of steaming flaky fish. The chips are well worthy too and they only go and put them in a cone to make Bloomsbury come over all seaside town.

Poppies is the hipster's choice of fish and chip shop, with staff dressed in 1950s garb and an interior modelled on a diner of the same era. Flaky fish comes in crunchy batter, and if you it to go it's wrapped in newspaper, retro-stylee.

Whether you visited Masters in the past five years or the past five days, your experience is likely to have been the same. Some things never change and huge portions still come accompanied by free prawns and pickles while you wait. The double fried chips and flaky fillets are some of London’s best.

History hunters will love the, erm, history of Golden Hind, what with all those black and white photos as evidence of a past dedicated to serving Londoners their fish and chips. The haddock at this Marylebone institution is the way to go and with BYOB the order of the day – it’s cheap as chips too!

There is a whole lot more to this Victoria Park restaurant than battered fish and chips. However, this is all about the deep-fried so whatever the quality of their mussels and crab we mustn’t get distracted. Portions are large, eco approved produce always hits the plates and a great atmosphere matches some of the best fish and chips in Hackney.

Sea Fresh takes its fish deliveries from the famous Billingsgate Market and further to offering battered fillets, also gives you the likes of whitebait and calamari. It may be in a fairly specific area – the middle of Victoria – but from the noises being made about the quality of its produce, Wicked the musical might not be the only reason to head this way.

Existing as both a restaurant and takeaway, Faulkner’s has had some ups and downs in its time but thanks to consistency it often manages to hit high on top F+C lists – just like ours. It may not be the most beautiful environment to enjoy the fish in batter, but wow, that batter, yum. And yum again.
