For those of you who may love the style of vintage clothes, but aren't so keen on the tiny sizes or dodgy smell of old people, Silk & Sawdust may well be a brand that tickles your fancy. Born from a lovely of vintage clothing, dressmaking and fabrics, Claudia Orrell was inspired to create her company after witnessing the incredible tailoring and dressmaking skills on offer in Bangkok and wanting to do her bit to keep the skill alive and give us style-conscious Brits access to beautifully hand-made creations.
Silk & Sawdust uses original vintage patterns and garments as a base, altering the designs to suit a modern silhouette and style, with the added bonus of your 'vintage' garment being new. Each piece is made with the utmost love and care, steeped in the history. Patterns re sourced from e-Bay, markets and vintage shops. re-cut to cater for different body shapes and tweaked in some cases to make them more wearable, whilst always retaining key vintage details such as darts, pleats and silhouettes. Sometimes a piece will be true to an original, other times elements of the design are used - for example using the panelling of a dress in a skirt, or taking a formal number and altering it to make it more casual. Inspiration also comes from sketches, old movies, photography and illustrations, the possibilities are endless. Fabrics are sourced from across the globe, London, Paris, Turkey and Thailand to name but a few.
From classic Little Black Dresses, to a Grease-style 50s prom number or a slick Jackie Kennedy look, Silk & Sawdust is quite possibly your one-stop vintage shop.
