Giant Winter Sun Installation in Trafalgar Square

The All In London Blog

Today, dawn broke an hour early in central London after a 22m Sun was raised over Trafalgar Square, at 6.51am.

The spectacular sight is a public art installation designed and built by the UK’s leading artists’ collective Greyworld, whose work was commissioned by fruit juice experts Tropicana to launch their Brighter Mornings campaign.

The Tropicana Sun which took six months to create is 30,000 times bigger than a football, has a surface area of 200m2 and weighs over 2,500kgs. Its internal core produces 4-million lumens of light, the equivalent of 60,000 light bulbs, bathing Trafalgar Square in beautiful summer sunshine.

The Tropicana Sun has been created to brighten a cold dark mid-winter day, with members of the public being encouraged to come down and blow away their winter blues by bathing under its warm glow.

Tropicana spokesperson, Pete Charles, said: “Sunlight is something many of us crave mid-winter. We hope that this stunning art installation will both amaze and enthuse those who see it, whilst brightening their mornings on a miserable January day. We hope people will be able to come down, relax in our deckchairs and enjoy a glass of Tropicana whilst watching the spectacular sunrise. The perfect start to a January day.’

Andrew Shoben, founder of Greyworld said: “There are very few moments more spectacular and uplifting than watching an early morning sunrise. We have tried to capture the evocative nature of this natural phenomenon with the Tropicana Sun, our latest piece of public art, which has been unveiled to help boost the mood of those who experience it.

The Tropicana Sun art installation will set at 7.33pm this evening, extending the daylight in Trafalgar Square by an additional three hours.
