Students from a dozen different UK universities are taking to the streets of London this week to raise funds for national charity Meningitis Research Foundation.
Students will descend on the capital tomorrow, targeting tube and mainline stations in central London for a period of two days (Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th April) trying to raise over £30,000 for Meningitis Research Foundation. Teenagers and young adults are one of the high risk groups and every year there are numerous cases of illness and deaths amongst the student population as a result of these deadly diseases.
MRF’s ‘London Loot’ will bring together over 130 Rag members from universities in Cambridge, Loughborough, Nottingham, Belfast, Bournemouth, Northumbria, Warwick, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Manchester, Kent and Exeter. The students are all on a mission to raise awareness of the diseases as well as filling their collecting buckets.
“London Loot is a big fundraising challenge for the students,” said Mike Taylor, Head of Fundraising. “Collecting £30,000 in spare change is hard work but the energy and enthusiasm of everyone involved really makes the whole experience memorable and fun whilst also raising money for research into meningitis and septicaemia. We hope the commuters of London will be generous and dig deep. ”

Meningitis and septicaemia are deadly diseases that can strike anyone without warning, killing one in ten, and leaving a quarter of survivors with life-long effects. There are around 3400 cases of the disease in the UK and few illnesses in Britain cause such mutilating injuries.
