Kids in London – Shopping, celebrities and Santa at Westfield

The prospect of Christmas shopping strikes fear into the hearts of most people. But for those with small people to entertain, it’s almost depressing. And these days, with the ease and convenience of doing it all on-line, there has to be a pressing reason to take the plunge and join the crowds.

Most years, I take mine up to the West End so that we can take in the decorations. This year you might contemplate Westfield Shepherd’s Bush. It’s not so bad on public transport – with both overground and tube stations practically outside as well as a variety of buses and car parking that doesn’t cost the earth.

Very small people will be delighted at the child-focused shops which are mostly in one place on the ground floor – I spied Lego, Early Learning Centre, The Entertainer toy shop, Disney, Build a Bear and My London Girl (where you can dress the same as your doll).

As well as the fast food options there are shops and concessions for healthier choices such as juices and smoothies, nuts (Nut Hut) and frozen yoghurt (Snog). There’s a soft play area for little ones – where mums and carers can sit on cushions while their charges run through tunnels and peep up periscopes – safe within a contained area. And as well as numerous loos there’s also a Family Room. What’s also nice are the frequent sit down areas with comfy chairs and a bit of space for the small folk to potter around without being crushed by shoppers.

And the teens will be happy enough at Apple, Game and HMW for electronics. There’s currently a number of Playstation “Follow me to play” booths in a central area and a jet simulator. And for the fashion conscious there’s Hollister, Gilly Hicks, Nike, SuperDry as well as numerous cosmetics and accessories shops.

And the billowing clouds of tiny lights above the open air terrace, the giant sparkling snowflakes attached to the living wall and the artfully decorated roof structures that look like frostily-lit trees are likely to generate a bit of Christmas spirit in even the stoniest heart.

There’s also events. When I went there I tarried a little at an Italian market outside and paused to watch Danni Minogue doing a photocall at Ernest Jones jewellers. Apparently, Taylor Swift had been in a few days earlier and the Kardashians are due to launch a clothes line on 10th November. Shortly to arrive will be the ice rink and an igloo where Santa (from 22nd November) will visit. Joining the Kids Club (under 6s) gets you a goody bag as well as birthday cards.
