Cosy riverside bars - Barmy Arms in Twickenham

Dogs in London - The London Dog Blog

Twickenham riverside is a popular haunt for dog walkers – even though there is a major redevelopment in progress at present. The Barmy Arms is a well-known summer drinking spot for dog lovers as there is a large outdoor area with fabulous river views looking across to Eel Pie Island.

However, in winter months the bar – deceptively large as it contains booths in bay window areas – offers a couple of open fires and some comfy winged armchairs. There’s a bowl of dog water just near the door. There’s an extensive menu and the bar folk are friendly. I don’t think dogs are allowed in the separate dining area – but it’s fine as you can eat in the bar. Mind you, on rugby days it can be rather busy with singing supporters. When I was there last Thursday evening there was a playful Labrapoodle pottering around with a ball while his owner enjoyed a pint.

The area boosts some other attractions for dog lovers. There is the recently restored fountain with Italian marble statues in York Gardens which is also home to lots of squirrels. You have to pass through the sculpture garden to get to the entrance. Then you can go over the old stone bridge into more gardens or take a short walk along the river to another dog friendly riverside pub – The White Swan. If you continue along the path you reach Marble Hill Park. There’s a fenced off children’s play area here and an outside café. Usually an ice cream van too.

If you go into Twickenham town instead, the recently refurbished The Fox (which is also a music venue) allows doggie visitors. There’s a small walled garden out the back and when I was there on Friday evening there were a number of dog with their owners in the side bar under the new conservatory.
